Checking out Marinas for future home

We had the opportunity to check out marinas in Hampton Roads Area. We looked at at least 5 in that area with 4 more left for the future perusing. We really likes Salt Ponds, there is a beach nearby and the marina has a pool. Check it out let us know what you think...... http://www.saltpondsmarinaresort.com

Working on the boat- removing lead, stripping the boat, removing windows

Power washing to remove stripper

"curing the stripper"
Since the last post Jim has been busy trying to strip the paint . He tried a test patch with plastic this time to see if the stripper would "cure" better. the boat was used for racing so the there has been lead added to the ballast. Jim is removing some of the lead today.

Getting to work on Ms. Spry

Removing battons
Sleeping birth-before
Adding tape before stripping paint
First things first we took off the rails so we could temporarily protect her from the weather, she has been exposed to the weather for so long (rainwater in the bilge) that we wanted to try and dry her out . Jim removed the interior battens so we could work on the hull. he applied the stripper to remove old paint and gelcoat.

Day Two- Name of the boat? Interior Pictures

Looking toward v-berth
So we have been thinking of some names and one seems to stick... Jim thought of  "Spry"  the dictionary defines Spry as.... 1. (adj.) spry
nimbly energetic; agile; brisk. That being said .. A student of mine brought up the fact that a boats name should be female. I believe Ms. Spry would be good, what do you think? Talking about names, does anyone out there know how to change the name of the boat so as not to "jinx" the boat. Is there an official ceremony?

I have added some interior pictures , please remember she has been on the hard for over ten years... we know there is work to do but those of you that know us know we can make it happen! Your support and feedback is appreciated.

Day One- The Boat has arrived!!

On the move!!
Backing into the drive!
I do not know who was more excited , Jim or I? The excitement carries over to more then the physical arrival of the boat (which I will go into in great detail). This is the actual day where our dream is manifesting. Let me give some back-story.  Jim and I did some sailing years before we were married (over 28 years ago!) Getting married, moving, having a baby, moving again, having another baby, moving again (the life of a builder) sailing was on the back burner in fact sailing was no where in the kitchen! Especially living in central Virginia. About five years ago we became full time empty- nesters, the craving to be on the water seeped back into our consciousness. We decided to take a certification course at a very reputable sailing school in Florida. The bug had struck we were hooked! We chartered a few more times, along the way quite by chance I was walking through our small town and saw a day- sailor in a back yard. We became the proud owners of a sixteen-foot Newport sailboat. She was trailarable, it was nice to take her anywhere, the local lake, the Chesapeake, the Outer banks, over the next 5 years we kept the bug alive! Quite by chance again (we were not really looking) I was on Craigs List looking for a trailer for my son, that's when I saw it. 1966 Cheoy Lee it was located only thirty minutes away! Jim called and it was still available, Jim went to look at it, it needed a lot of work but was basically very sea worthy. Now the task of finding a boat hauler and a crane! It took about a month of organizing but Jim made it work and the boat arrived today! Here are some pictures. Please forward this blog to anyone you know who may be interested it watching us start this rehab of a classic.
